Inazuma Eleven ('inazuma' means 'lightning') sees the player take charge of goalkeeping ace Mark Evans. He is captain of the football team at Raimon Junior High but at the start of the game, there are only seven players in the club. As if on cue, newly-arrived student Axel Blaze reveals himself to be a striker of some repute and the fun moves forward from there.
Inazuma Eleven has become something of an industry in Japan – where there is an anime, a manga and two other DS titles, with a Wii game and 3DS version in the works – Inazuma Eleven has taken it's time to transfer to the West. Now the first game has made it, a mere three years after it was released in Japan.
This is Nelly Raimon, daughter of the school's governor. Haughty and interfering, she ends up being your third co-manager.
At first we were concerned that the gameplay styles would clash badly but the way they are married together is actually brilliant. After securing the football club's future, the team turn their attention to qualifying for the Football Frontier Finals, which involves a series of 11-a-side games. In between those, you run around the map tackling story-advancing tasks. After a certain point you start to get random battles (true!): 4-a-side games played out with the members of your current party against rival sports clubs in the school.
It's on the pitch where things start to heat up. With a little tweaking the football element could be a decent game in its own right. Whilst there isn't a real equivalent of hit points, the other major RPG trappings are in place: ordinary attacks, MP for special moves (like stronger shots, tougher tackles and more reliable saves), recruitable and rotatable party members, experience points and levelling up. Each special move has an element attached to it: match the element to the player's elemental type for massive damage! Or, err, a better shot/tackle/save.
Star striker Axel Blaze taking a shot. Looks uncomfortable to us!
Entirely stylus-driven, the only quibbles we had with the football were the arbitrary nature of the fouls the ref gave and the poor AI of your players once they got the ball. Stylus direction was almost mandatory once they got near the penalty area, or they'd just run straight forward. Dumb as sticks. Anyway, non-football fans can rest assured that this area of the game stands up really well.
In fact, the title as a whole stands up really well. The graphics are cute and clear, with the animations for the special moves a particular highlight. They reminded us of our characters in Dragon Quest IX, which is no surprise as Level-5 worked on both titles. The cut-scenes are beautiful, even if the voices feel strange – dubbing does not suit the action, we're afraid, particularly when Mark Evans sounds exactly like Luke from the Professor Layton games! The music varies from decent to strong, but the effects let the side down (arf) by being a little functional.
Main character Mark Evans takes a dive. It's all right, he's the goalkeeper – it's allowed!
The story really shines, though. OK, so the standard "Always believe in yourself" message is hammered home repeatedly, but it's shot through with heart. Things do get a bit soap opera at times but the plot unfolds beautifully into something much more involved and involving. It also moved this reviewer to tears. Twice. Not bad for a game from the middle of the DS's lifespan.
The problem, as you might expect, is that it's a bit limited. If you don't like your football the appeal will not be the same, although we feel the storyline is strong enough to carry it. If you do like your football you can work out ways to exploit the system (hint: pass a lot) and then breeze through the game. However, with a thousand players to recruit from (and you can only have a hundred in your squad), finding the very best team could almost be a full-time job.
So a game that passes muster. However, it's not properly been released in the UK or the US yet and has slipped from the UK release schedules. You could be patient, or… dare we suggest a cheeky import from mainland Europe? Yes. We dare.
8/10
O jogo FINALMENTE vai sair no UK amanhã... 26 de Agosto.
