Kiosk Demo Disabled in Latest Patch
Round 1 ends in Microsoft the victor. Yes, apparently that latest Live Dashboard Patch today has completely disabled the Kiosk Demo from playing. This has been verified. When you insert your copy of the Kiosk Demo after the patch, this error appears:

Unrecognized Disc
This disc is unreadable.
1. Clean the disc with a soft cloth.
2. Restart the console.
For more help, go to www.xbox.com/support.

It seems that Microsoft is taking a proactive approach to shutting out all holes in the system, including that of the Kiosk Demo. Hackers everywhere now breathe a collective sigh of frustration. Of course, the patch is not applied unless you try to sign on to Xbox Live, and only after you accept the patch. It remains to be seen if Microsoft will incorporate the patch into new games like the PSP has done -- refusing to let you play at all until you upgrade. Of course, everyone knows how that war is turning out for Sony. (In case you didn't know: Hackers are putting up a damn good fight.)

Nem o famoso internet explorer , nem divx, anda a circular na net um baixo assinado por causa da consola nao ler dvix, pelo q li não pode ser considerado pirata porque muitas marcas de leitores de dvd trazem os codecs para ver esse formato.

Datel to release 4GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 - Lik-Sang's First Impressions

We have received from the mighty Datel the first evaluation sample of their next product to come: a new 4GB "harddrive" solution for the Xbox 360. Will it rock or will it suck? Will it float or will it sink? We're about to find out soon.ne thing is for sure, if you are waiting for a third-party HDD for your core Xbox 360 system because you are pissed at both the high price and low availability of the official Microsoft unit... well, this is not yet what you have been begging for. This new device is connected to the 360 via the USB connection, same as any other portable PC hard drives or USB drives would be, and it does not offer the same range of options as the official HDD does (no game saves, no going online, only media files transfer). It also offers only 4GB of space, same as the very popular HDD that these guys just outted for the PSP. In fact, it uses the same Magicstor 4 gigs microdrives inside. From our point of view, the coolest thing about it is probably the greenish power button drawing on the top of the product. Or arguably the fact that a green glowin' light comes out of the USB connector when you slot it in your console [wow]. Lik Sang is not convinced if this gimmick will prove to be cool enough for geek-chic circles and hardcore gamers out there. But then again, Datel is probably aiming at the pick-my-games-at-supermarket-with-my-salad crowd on this one. Price point is expected to be above the 100 US$ mark [did I start the article saying the Microsoft 20 gigs drive was expensive?] and Datel plans to launch before the end of February.

Xbox 360 loses remote

When the Xbox 360 made its grand launch in North America last November, gamers who got a hold of the hard-to-find premium pack were treated to a few extras. In addition to a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, and HD AV cables, early adopters also got a limited edition Xbox 360 Media Remote Control. Though chances of finding an Xbox 360 are remote, the chances of finding one with the bonus remote are even more...remote.

The limited run of bonus Media Remote Controls is apparently over. A GameStop employee has confirmed to GameSpot that the bonus remotes have not been shipping with the Xbox 360 Premium Packs that have been trickling into their store. This means that Xbox 360 preorders that still remain unfulfilled--and may very well have been placed months ago--won't be getting the controller.

Xbox 360 Dashboard and Kernel Update - Kiosk Disc Blocked *UPDATED*

As mentioned yesterday Microsoft released a mandatory update for dashboard and kernel of the Xbox 360 today. Both Dash and kernel go from version 2.0.2241.0 to 2.0.2255.0, but it looks like the 'background download' feature is not there yet. From teamxbox.com and xbox.com:
This free update, is now available over Xbox Live. There are no new features in this release, but rather a series of fixes and enhancements. Some of the items the update addresses are:
* Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data.
* Users reporting blank Friends List on the Xbox 360 dash after muting a friend while playing a game in Backwards Compatibility mode.
* Improved synching of games played to Web and in console.
* Network settings: keyboard does now allow entry of - (dash) character in the keyboard.
* Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
* Increased accuracy of "last time played."
* Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live members in the Netherlands.
* More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.*UPDATE* Not listed in the 'improvements', but it looks like Microsoft also tightened the security as they blocked the Kiosk Disc (a DVD with demo games sent to shops to run in their Kiosk/Demo Xbox 360 and that was found to be signed to also boot from recordable media) from booting so we can no longer experiment with the unsigned data (like music, videos, bf, swf, ... files) on that disc. Several people have confirmed today on our forums that you'll get an "unrecognized disc" error when inserting the disc in an updated Xbox 360.
There's also an article about it on

WMS Blames '360 for Game Sales Decline

WMS' prior forecast, released in October 2005 prior to the Xbox 360 launch, predicted that the market would grow by 11 percent in 2006. The significant shift from positive to negative growth is due to weaker than expected demand in late 2005. According to WMS, much of that weakness is attributed directly to the unavailability of the Xbox 360.

Once again, WMS states that Microsoft did a "phenomenal" job of marketing the console, which backfired when the people who wanted it couldn't get it. Microsoft created a sales vacuum, as the typical transitional decline of current generation software occurred, with no next-generation software being bought. Contrary to what Directions of Microsoft analyst Matt Rosoff stated, WMS believes that continuing Xbox 360 supply issues combined with an announced PS3 launch date will cause consumers to defer their interest and money away from Microsoft's console.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, however. WMS predicts a turning point at the end of 2006 as next generation and handheld software sales ramp up, which will help offset current generation software declines. Also helping the dollar sales figures are increased average selling prices for software, which is being driven by higher-priced PSP and Xbox 360 titles.

WMS also expects price cuts this year for the PS2 (which costs $80 to manufacture), GBA SP (from $79 to $59), PSP and DS.

MLB 2K6 Will Feature Inaugural World Baseball Classic

n an announcement today, sure to make baseball fans salivate, the upcoming MLB 2K6 will feature the World Baseball Classic, the much-anticipated 16-country tournament that will feature the greatest ballplayers in, yes, the world.

Cuba, Japan, the Dominican Republic, Australia…the gang's all here. 2K Sports did confirm today that all Major League ballplayers included in the regular version of the game will be included in the WBC mode, but it remains to be seen if non-MLB players will make it into the game. Also, there's no word yet if the new WBC rules will be included, like pitch limits and mercy rules. Currently, there is a 65-pitch limit in first-round games and pitchers will be ineligible to throw for four days after an appearance of more than 50 pitches. These rules are meant to ensure that MLB studs like Dontrelle Willis don't throw out their arms come the dog-days of summer. Of course, that brings up another great question: Will injuries in the WBC be reflected in the MLB 2K6 franchise mode? Time will tell.

Still, one of the most exciting baseball contests ever staged will be playable, and that's good news for all baseball fans, real players or no. The first round of the WBC kicks off March 3, while MLB 2K6 is scheduled to be released March 6.

"The World Baseball Classic is going to be a winner and will highlight the appeal and passion for baseball throughout the world," said Tim Brosnan, Executive Vice President, Business, Major League Baseball. "Being a part of MLB 2K6 will give videogame players and baseball fans the opportunity to experience the excitement of the Classic. It's a natural extension

Xbox 360 Remotes No Longer Shipping

When the Xbox 360 made its grand launch in North America last November, gamers who got hold of the hard-to-find premium pack were treated to a few extras. In addition to a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, and HD AV cables, early adopters got a limited-edition Xbox 360 Media Remote Control. Though chances of finding an Xbox 360 are remote, the chances of finding one with the bonus remote are even more...remote.

The limited run of bonus Media Remote Controls is apparently over. A GameStop employee has confirmed to GameSpot that the bonus remotes have not been shipping with the Xbox 360 Premium Packs that have been trickling into their stores. This means that Xbox 360 preorders that still remain unfulfilled--and may very well have been placed months ago--won't be getting the controller. GameSpot has received unconfirmed reports that the discontinuation has infuriated gamers who preordered the console long ago expecting the remote to be included.

All is not lost, though. Gamers looking to get a TV-style remote control to play DVDs and whatnot can still pony up for Microsoft's Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote ($29.99) or Logitech's Harmony Advanced Universal Remote for Xbox 360 ($129.99).

Ninety-Nine Nights for the Xbox 360 Dated

Microsoft today announced that Ninety-Nine Nights has been dated for release on April 20 in Japan. The game will be priced at 7,140 yen ($61). Ninety-Nine Nights' official site has been revamped together with the announcement, and it features new content, including additional screenshots.

Ninety-Nine Nights is former Sega producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi's debut title for the Xbox 360. It also happens to be his first console game since he established his independent studio, Q Entertainment. The game is a collaborative project between Q Entertainment and Korean studio Phantagram, which is known for its Kingdom Under Fire strategy series.

Ninety-Nine Nights is an action game with strategy elements, and it takes place in a fantasy world where humans and other races are in a war with each other. Players will control a massive army that is challenged by hordes of enemies. Using the processing power of the Xbox 360, the game will render more than 1,000 soldiers on the screen at once.

Xbox 360 to Gain More Cred in Japan?

The Xbox 360 launch in Japan, without a doubt, fizzled over and died. Though the launch event was met with success, days after the launch systems could be found on shelves longing to be picked up by somebody, anybody.

We in America, meanwhile, looked on unbelievably. Apparently, the system just didn't launch with the games that the Japanese wanted to see. Dead or Alive, most notably, was delayed, which was almost directly responsible for the poor sales of the system. Over at Gameshout, they wonder if Microsoft's luck will change soon, with a number of new titles coming out in Japan that should appeal to their individual gaming interests.

According to Gameshout:

SEGA has talked about a possible conversion of two popular arcade titles, Virtua Fighter 5 and House of the Dead 4. Capcom has also said they will be bringing Dead Rising and Lost Planet in late 2006. The question still remains; will this be enough to grab a piece of the Japanese market? Maybe, but Microsoft needs to keep bringing the Japanese the games they like, otherwise the Xbox 360 will never take off in Japan.

Microsoft World Launch Hurts Bottom Dollar

With all the hoopla surrounding Microsoft's worldwide launch, it seemed a few weeks before launch that Microsoft had gotten its act together, so much so that launching worldwide was an option at all. Leading up to the launch here in America, the rumors started that Microsoft might not be able to supply the increasing demand for its system.

Well, we all know the rest. Microsoft was unable to produce enough systems in America, and the U.K., yet launched in Japan -- where no one wanted it. Even today, Microsoft continues to experience problems getting out to the remaining markets, most notably Australia.

The flub-up hasn't simply tarnished Microsoft's image a little, it actually put a dent in some early predictions the company had made to investors.

According to figures in the Financial Times, the company's revenues grew by only nine per cent - two per cent lower than estimates. Microsoft blamed "manufacturing issues" for failing to sell as many consoles as hoped and also said its internet search operations had not performed as well as it had forecast. Microsoft's chief financial officer Chris Liddell, blamed the "volatility" of launching the Xbox 360 in 19 different countries for slightly lower sales than expected.

Hopefully Microsoft will ramp up its production schedule and other video game companies looming on the horizon (I'm looking at you PS3 and Revolution) won't repeat the mistakes of their competitor.

id's John Carmack: Xbox 360 Likely to Become id's Primary Platform

PC Gamer UK shares its late-night interview with John Carmack, conducted by PCGUK's Tim Edwards. See the interview in its entirety when the magazine hits stands February 7.

On a new rendering engine

"For the last year I’ve been working on new rendering technologies. It comes in fits and starts. Our internal project that’ll incorporate it hasn’t been publicly announced. We’re doing simultaneous development on Xbox 360 and PC, and we intend to release on PlayStation 3 simultaneously as well, but it’s not a mature enough platform right now for us to be doing much work on."

Consoles vs. PC

"The difference between theoretical performance and real-world performance on the CPU level is growing fast. On, say, a regular Xbox, you can get very large fractions of theoretical performance with not a whole lot of effort. The PlayStation 2 was always a mess with the multiple processors on there, but the new generations, with Cell or the Xbox 360, make it much, much worse. They can quote these incredibly high numbers of giga-flops or tera-flops or whatever, but in reality, when you do a straightforward development process on them, they’re significantly slower than a modern high-end PC."

"...The graphics systems are much better than that, though. Graphics have an inherent natural parallelism. The capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PS3 are really good on the graphics side — although, not head or shoulders above any PC stuff that you can buy at a higher price-point."

Xbox 360: 'A really sweet develoment system'

"The Xbox 360 will probably will be id's primary development platform. As it is right now, we would get the game up on the 360. When I would do major hack-and-slash architectural changes it was back on the PC, but it’s looking like the Xbox 360 will be our target. All of our tools are on the PC, and we’re maintaining the game running on the PC, but probably all of our gameplay development and testing will be done on the Xbox 360. It’s a really sweet development system."

Itagaki Talks DOA Xtreme Beach Vollyball 2 and DOA 4 Issues

In the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox 360, Dead or Alive series producer Tomonobu Itagaki commented about Dead or Alive 4's numerous delays for the first time.

While it's rare for Itagaki to make an apology, he told the magazine he feels sorry for the last-minute postponements of the well-reviewed fighter. Itagaki said that he never presumed to think that his games would affect the sales of a console. Now, though, he admits that the DOA4 delay caused major problems for the Xbox 360's launch in Japan. Nonetheless, he decided that he didn't want to release the game in an unpolished form and cause disappointment, as several 360 launch titles did in North America.

Despite DOA4's extended development, Itagaki confirms that there still are a few problems with playing the game on Xbox Live, and Team Ninja is working hard to fix the issues. He told the magazine that currently his team is having problems figuring out whether it's Xbox Live or the game itself that's causing the issues. He said the first update is scheduled for mid-February. Aside from bug fixes, it will also feature some minor changes to the game's interface.

Itagaki also told Famitsu Xbox 360 that plans to release new outfits for DO4 characters via Xbox Live Marketplace have been put off due to budget and staffing issues. However, Itagaki did say that fans and Team Ninja members had expressed interest in new costumes--and that if such costumes are ever made, they would not be free.

In the interview, Itagaki also confirmed that his next Xbox 360 release will be Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2, the sequel to the risqué 2003 sports game. Itagaki said Team Ninja is already working on the opening and ending scenes for the game, and he is currently implementing some new ideas to the original design. Itagaki avoided commenting on a release period.

After DOAXBV2, Itagaki say he will release an "action game." However, he hinted that the title in question won't be a sequel to Ninja Gaiden, which means it will either be Project Progressive, Dead or Alive Code: Cronus, or another title. He says the keyword for the game will be "interactivity," which will also go for the next Ninja Gaiden. He did not elaborate.

Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires Confirmed for the Xbox 360 This Year

It's getting to the point where there are almost as many iterations of Koei's Dynasty Warriors series as there are onscreen characters in the games' epic battles. The list grew again today, as Koei announced a March 28 release in North America for Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires on the PlayStation 2. Meanwhile, a Koei representative confirmed that an Xbox 360 version of DW5 Empires will be released in North America later this year.

Much like Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires before it, DW5 Empires brings a more tactical bent to the franchise's battlefield-based action. Whether using the fine art of diplomacy to get one's way or giving specific orders to officers on the battlefield, players will take control of their kingdoms' political and military decisions on and off the battlefield.

By the numbers, the game features four unlockable scenarios to play through, two-player co-op modes, new items, more than 200 playable characters, and 75 different policies to dictate everything from how the government runs to how its battles are fought. The game also includes an encyclopedia full of information on ancient China for those fascinated by the Dynasty Warriors setting.

Koei has not yet announced a price for either edition of the game.
