Intel Launches X38 Express Chipset

Intel Prepares X38 Express Launch

Intel officially set its performance embargo on its upcoming X38 Express chipset for September 23. Motherboards based on the X38 Express chipset should show up in retail in early September, according to motherboard vendors.

Intel’s X38 Express introduces PCIe 2.0 support to the LGA775 platform. PCIe 2.0 offers greater bandwidth over the existing PCIe standard – up to four gigatransfers per second, or GT/s, with the 20% encoding overhead accounted for. The chipset also supports dual full-speed PCIe x16 slots for ATI CrossFire multi-GPU technology. Intel guidance does not show any indication of support for NVIDIA's SLI Technology.

Expect motherboards based on the Intel X38 Express to pop up in retail next month. DailyTech estimates the cost of entry around $200 for a no-frills board and around $300 for boards that include a kitchen sink in the package.

(menos no SLI :()

X38 board to drive DDR 3 over the top

Over DDR3-2000 range

X38 sample boards are already in the labs and we can say that the X38 will be the next big overclocking thing. When it comes to memory speeds it should be able to push DDR3 memory all the way to DDR3 2000 if not even faster.

You will need high quality memory and some huge voltage values, but it can be done. P35 memory overclocking will simply warm you up and the X38 will be the real thing. It is also expected that Nvidia should have its new DDR3 chipset soon, but we know very little about it.

High quality DDR3 can go over 1600 right now, but we need some higher speeds than that.

MSI jumps the gun with X38 board

X38 Diamond has 4 PCIe cards and DDR3 /2

MSI made a brief introduction of its upcoming X38 based motherboard. This might be among the first board to support Intel X38 high end chipset. This Ultra high end motherboard will be really overclockable and it comes with 4 Phase PWM design.

The most interesting is the four PCIe express physical 16X ports all PCI 2.0 ready but electronically two of them are PCIe 16 while two are PCI 4X. This will still be enough to host four PCIe cards at the same time.

It also comes with 4 DDR3 memory slots and 2 DDR2 slots so it will make the transition really easy and the board comes with well known X-Fi audio.

The board should be ready in September time.

MSI X38 mobo to have many new features

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/08/17/msi_x38_to_have_tons_of_features/1

The MSI X38 Diamond will use the X38 chipset seen above.

Sources close to MSI have told bit-tech that those waiting for the next generation Intel X38 chipset can expect a whole host of new features on the company's flagship motherboard.

The sources said that MSI will use a brand new "Circu-Pipe Liquid" technology, which is an upgraded version of what we saw on the MSI P35 Platinum. Whether it will be just liquid inside the heatpipes that you'll never see, or some form of user watercooling has yet to be seen though.

The board includes support for both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, allowing the end user who is desperate to finally have an alternative to the RD600 DFI ICFX3200 T2R/G for ATI CrossFire, that uses an Intel chipset and has a decent upgrade path. Having both DDR2 and DDR3 support on the board means that you won't need to fork out for both a (potentially expensive) motherboard and expensive DDR3 when DDR3 becomes more widely accepted.

There is a single power regulation phase for both DDR2 and DDR3, as well as separate power phases for both PCI-Express x16 slots which will deliver a full x16 bandwidth on top of support for PCI-Express 2.0 too.

The CPU now also gets a four-way dual-channel PWM design. How this is different from a simple eight-phase design, we aren't quite sure, maybe it's similar to the Abit IP35 Pro's 4x3 arrangement?

The X38 Diamond also comes with the X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-Express x1 card, like the P35 Diamond, and it also has two extra PCI-Express x16 slots from an extra chipset - these both support up to x4 bandwidth. However, this is at the expense of including an extra PCI slot (of which there is only one) and to be honest why include two PCI-Express x4 slots instead of a single PCI-Express x8 which is more suitable for high end RAID setups and GPU-Physics (if it ever arrives).

On the stacked rear I/O there are now eight USB ports, Firewire, PS/2, S/PDIF, a couple of Gigabit Ethernet and eSATAs as well as six 3.5mm audio jacks.

Finally MSI has dropped the quite frankly crap D-LED readout in favour of a new POST LED readout! Huzzah!

We'll leave you with what we believe is the first image of MSI's X38 Diamond motherboard to hit the 'net, but please bear in mind that this obviously isn't the final cooling solution. Instead, it'll have the aforementioned Circu-Pipe Liquid cooler which will cover the PWMs too. The board is also missing the four extra SATA ports down on the bottom right where you can see the solder points ready for them.
