WITH TODAYS LAUNCH of Intel's own Santa Rosa chipset, NVIDIA launched its own low-end and mainstream parts for the mobile market.
The G84M and G86M came to life as a part of the new GeForce 8M series, instead of previous the old branding GeForce Go. The products are called the 8600M and 8400M rather than baring the Go 8600/8400 tag.
The GeForce 8600M is split between the 8600M GS and 8600M GT, while the 8400M is offered as the 8400M G, GS and GT models. As expected, the 8600 caters to the mainstream segment of notebooks, while the 8400 will try to find its way between low-end and thin'n'light notebooks.
New revisions of the G84 and G86 chips now feature all the power-saving techniques we learned about since Graphzilla launched its GeForce FX series: clock gating, 3D performance modes and so on.
These mobile designs are also the reasons why both Nvidia and ATi opted to create chips with a smaller-than-expected number of shader units.
As far as a mobile version of the G80 is concerned, a new chip is on its way, and will debut during summer. We'd expect a launch at Game Convention in August, since that time is in-line with final preparations for the back-to-school shopping frenzy. µ
