Fedora 11 Alpha Comes With Huge Feature Set

While a few delays were experienced by the Red Hat engineers and community working on Fedora 11 (a.k.a. Leonidas), the first alpha release of this popular Linux distribution is now available. The 11th release of Fedora will bring a huge set of new features and updated packages, with much of the work already being visible in Fedora 11 Alpha.

Starting with the installation, Fedora 11 is now using the EXT4 file-system by default but there is support built into the Anaconda installer for Btrfs, which recently entered the mainline Linux kernel.

Some of the desktop features in Fedora 11 include a new GNOME volume control interface, and PackageKit firmware support.

Fedora 11 will ship with GNOME 2.26, KDE 4.2, X Server 1.6, and the Linux 2.6.29 kernel.

Fedora 11 also provides a preview of MinGW, which is an environment for developers to cross-compile their programs to run on Windows but being built on Fedora.

The release notes for Fedora 11 are available at FedoraProject.org. The announcement with download links can be found on the Fedora mailing list..

Existe um problema com o live cd e com o ext4. Não sei bem o que é, mas pelos vistos recomenda-se que se espere pela próxima versão para quem quiser realmente usar o novo sistema.

Red Hat Fedora Linux 10 Nears 1 Million Users Mark
Internet News writes about a major mark for Fedora 10 release. Fedora remains the only distribution to publish it's statistics and gathering methods openly and transparently. In any case, they reached 1 million active installations of Fedora Linux 10.Red Hat's Fedora Linux 10 has been out since the end of November 2008, and is now hovering around the 1 million installations mark. Fedora uses a system to measure active installations that check the update repositories in order to determine how many installations are in use.
When combined with other actively used Fedora distributions as of Feb 16, 2009, Fedora's counting method reports 12,188,598 Fedora Linux installations across Fedora 7, 8, 9 and 10 releases. Obviously, some of those have been updated to later version already, and might have been counted twice.
On Fedora 10 in particular, in contrast with adoption for Fedora 9 for a similar period, Fedora 10 is at 115 percent adoption (that is a greater adoption rate for the first 12 weeks of release for Fedora 10 than Fedora 9).

Fedora 11 beta beefs up Linux security

Leonidas scheduled for May release.
The Fedora 11 beta is available online for download from the project's website. The final release of Fedora 11, code-named Leonidas, is scheduled to be available by the end of May.
Red Hat uses Fedora as a proving ground for new technologies for its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). While not all of the features in Fedora end up in RHEL, it is a good way for people to test and use features before deploying them in a production environment or using them as part of RHEL, said Paul Frields, Red Hat's Fedora Project Leader. A combination of Red Hat and third-party developers contribute code to Fedora, and Frields manages the integration of Fedora features into RHEL.
New Fedora 11 features include one that will be useful for people working on desktop PCs that connect to Fedora servers in the back end, Frields said. A new automatic-content installation feature, that uses Fedora's PackageKit software-management system, lets users automatically download a font, feature or even an application they need if they come across a file that needs an extension not found locally on a PC.
"If I email you a document using OpenOffice.org on your new Fedora 11 system, you can download that attachment and PacketKit will install it for you," he said.
The feature works by detecting what a file needs and then accessing a software repository running in Fedora. The repository includes only free and open-source software.
Frields said this kind of feature differentiates an open-source system like Fedora from a proprietary OS like Windows because that model is meant to "sell you more software," not provide free extensions or fonts.
Fedora project developers also have added security for virtualised containers running on the OS by extending Fedora's security model, SELinux, Frields said. A new extension called Svirt provides access control for virtual guests, locking what processes the guests have access to, he said.
The feature works in the same way that SELinux provides a "valet key" for other processes in the system, only letting them touch other processes relevant to the task they're performing to prevent the spread of an attack on a specific process, Frields said. "So if something happens to a virtual guest, there is very little opportunity for an attacker to get access to the rest of the system," he said.

Fedora 11 also includes a new cross-compiler for Microsoft Windows applications that lets developers build applications for the Windows OS on the Fedora system. Developers can use whatever language they need -- usually C++, Frields said - to build the application.
The current version of RHEL is 5.3, with 6.0 being the next major release of the OS that would incorporate Fedora features. Red Hat has not laid out a timeline or feature set for RHEL 6.0, Frields said. However, the company is always adding new functionality to incremental releases of RHEL.

Fedora 11 Hits A Last Minute Delay, June Release

Red Hat's Jesse Keating has shared on the Fedora announcement list that Fedora 11 will not be released in May as originally intended. Due to 24 bugs at present on the Fedora 11 bug tracker, they have postponed the release from the 26th of May to the 2nd of June.

This one week delay will hopefully allow Fedora / Red Hat developers to address the remaining critical bugs with this next Fedora release. For those Fedora users now waiting around for the release of Leonidas, you can have your hand at coming up with the Fedora 12 codename.

Fedora 11 “Leonidas” is Almost Ready to Kick Ass!

A few more days from now, the latest and hopefully the greatest version of one of the most popular Linux distributions will be released. For those of you who loved Fedora 10, then the reasons are plenty for you to like version 11 (codename Leonidas) more.

To get everyone excited, let's take a look at some of the many great features that the upcoming Fedora 11 will incorporate:

Faster Boot Speed
Probably a shot at beating the boot speed of Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackaope", Fedora aims to startup or to be at login screen (GNOME) in 20 seconds or less. As they say, a faster boot makes for happy users.

Automatic Fonts & Mime Installer
This new feature will certainly make Fedora much friendlier to Linux newbies. Users will be able to automatically install applications, fonts, multimedia codecs and clipart in just a few clicks. There's also a new popup like when you try to play an unsupported media file, open an unknown file, or use fonts that are not suitable.

Improved Power Management
Laptop and netbook owners will have a good reason to use Fedora 11 since the developers are working hard on conserving battery power consumption. With the use of new measuring tools, they were able to locate power greedy applications that led to tuned daemon, which can automatically set the power saving levels.

Significant RPM Update

RPM 4.7 has notably improved over its previous version in terms of performance. Memory consumption has been reduced a lot. A test-case of "everything install" of Fedora 10 used to top at near 1.5GB memory consumption, now the peak with the same package set is just over 300MB. For users, this means a much faster upgrades and improved handling of failed upgrades.

Flexible and Easy-to-use Volume Control
To make volume control more intuitive and user-friendly, Fedora 11 will ship with a revised volume control and sound user interfaces. The result is an easily understandable and much more flexible volume control model. To somehow let you know what I mean, here are a few screenshots:

Updated Applications
Essential programs and applications like GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Firefox, Thunderbird, and Python are upgraded to their latest versions.

You will find these and more on the latest approaching version of Fedora. So will you be in for one wild night (I mean release)?
