Mushroom Men

IGN disse:
Gamecock's bunker at the Hotel California in Santa Monica hosted a diverse line-up of titles this week, including developer Red Fly's intriguing Mushroom Men, an actioner starring civilized edible fungi that must wage war against poisonous mushrooms. While Red Fly was unable to show real-deal gameplay running on either the Nintendo Wii and DS, they were excited to roll some very cool character art that the design team is currently turning into 3D models and some very short snippets of early play footage.

Mushroom Men traffics in pure fantasy -- the mushroom designs are wonderfully quirky, complete with glowing green eyes, rolled leaf backpacks, and multiple caps that stretch high above character heads. (Imagine the Ents, but much, much smaller.) The bad mushrooms are particularly nasty, looking like little nightmares with red peepers and combat horrible poses. The mushrooms are not the only sentient vegetation in the game. Players will interact with self-aware kudzu and a cactus gang called Los Cactos.

You see the world from the three-inch vantage point -- humans are colossi that throw long shadows across the landscape. The mushrooms scavenge human artifacts to create their buildings and equipment. Train tracks are composed of discarded clothespins. Weapons are assembled from staple removers and corn cob holders. In fact, players will take an active role in developing weapons from recovered human objects, working to build gear that will put the poisonous mushrooms under the dirt.

The brief game clips showed off an emphasis on exploration. The levels look quite large, such as a stage set inside a human house. The mushroom hero scurries across the floor and then fires a sticky line to climb a box. The goal is a box across a gap, so the mushroom makes a leap of faith and then glides through the air, using his mushroom cap as a parachute.

Even though Red Fly is developing Mushroom Men for the Wii, the art team is creating all of the textures are models in high-res should Gamecock want to game to cross over to either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 in the future. The Wii and DS editions of Mushroom Men are skedded for release in 2008. Redfly expects the DS version to lead the Wii version by about six weeks.

Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars (Wii)

The storyline revolves around a comet that passes close to Earth and leaves a rain of green dust that makes plants and animals gain consciousness, thus creating humanoid mushroom who have to fight for their lives against attacks from evil rabbits and other animals.

The levels are enormous and players are free to roam through them. Given the minuscule size of the main character, just climbing a chair or a table could prove quite a challenge. Luckily, the hero has a sticky hand, which is one of the characters major tools, and it allows him to reach far places.

Besides the sticky hand, players will be able to create a large amount of weapons by using several objects such as toothpicks, safety pins, an x-acto knife and even a DS stylus. The weapon creation plays a major role in the game and seems to be quite addicting to scavenger for new weapon materials.

And while there is plenty of combat, puzzles are a big part of the game, which in many ways is very reminiscent of GameCube’s Chibi-Robo!, except for the graphics. Mushroom Men’s art direction is spectacular, and it’s obvious developer Red Fly Studio has spent a good amount of time perfecting it. The color palette, at least for the level shown has very dark tones, and the graphics are truly impressive for a Wii game.

The game’s development seems to be on the right track, and hopefully we'll be able to have some hands-on time with the game before its forth quarter release window.

Espectacular!
