The last time we spoke the Japanese market was in decline – has there been a recovery?

Hirokazu Hamamura:
Nintendo’s DS and Wii attracted a huge amount of new users into gaming. As a result, Japan’s gaming market has actually greatly expanded.

How is the Japanese market performing in general, and what are the key drivers for its success currently?

HH:
On top of the fact that the DS and Wii are still enjoying steady growth, there are emerging signs of Sony’s platforms picking up. The PSP market has been dramatically improved with the success of the Monster Hunter series. Also, the hot-selling Metal Gear Solid 4 is fuelling the PS3 market. I have great expectations on upcoming third-party titles to give further impetus to the PSP and PS3 markets.

Nintendo has been the driving force behind any growth that has occurred, would that be correct?

HH:
I believe that’s correct without any doubt. Nintendo’s console and handheld have brought in a large number of new gamers. The success of this strategy allowed Japan’s gaming market to make a solid recovery from its slowing trend.

Has there been a shift toward handheld gaming in recent years, given the success of DS and PSP?

HH:
Compared to console gaming, where you have to sit in front of the TV for a long time, handheld gaming is more suitable for today’s busy lifestyle. Handheld gaming was only a supporting player in the past, but I expect it to take the main role in the future gaming world.

How do you think Nintendo will keep up the momentum on Wii? Do you think peripherals like the Mario Kart wheel and the Wii Fit board will be increasingly important?

HH:
Nintendo has proved that a peripheral can open a new way of gaming with its Mario Kart and Wii Fit. I hope physical games like these will continuously come out to propose new gaming experiences. As for the future of the Wii, I believe third-party titles will take on greater importance for the system’s further development, since a line-up that only has similarly-flavoured games would possibly lead to fans’ boredom. In this context, I have great expectations on Capcom’s Monster Hunter 3 for Wii.

How important do you think the platform holders’ online
strategies are?

HH:
I’m keeping a watchful eye on the network strategies of the three platform holders. Nintendo’s network strategy is very interesting. I’m impressed with their activities based on their good understanding of users’ needs, like Virtual Console and WiiWare. As for Sony, I’m keen to find out how high the quality of PlayStation Home will be able to reach by its launch.

Wii Tops 30 Million Worldwide

Wii Sells 30 Million Units Worldwide

Wii is set to pass Nintendo 64 lifetime shipments (32.9m) by August or September

With sell through data now in for the week ending July 26, 2008 Nintendo’s Wii console has topped 30 million units in lifetime sales worldwide. Given the lag time between shipments and sell through, and that Wii shipments are likely at ~30m through June 30, 2008 (we’ll see in a few hours) Wii should pass the lifetime shipments of the Nintendo 64 (32.9m ) sometime in August, and Wii is positioned to surpass SNES shipments (49.1m ) by the end of either Nintendo’s third quarter (December 31, 2008) or by the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year (March 31, 2009).

To reach 30 million units, Wii has sold 13.12m in the Americas in 88 weeks, 6.49m in Japan in 86 weeks, and 10.4m in Others in 86 weeks since (the European) launch. Such rates average out to sales of roughly 149,000/week in the Americas, roughly 75,500/week in Japan, and roughly 121,000/week in Others. Since Wii has already topped Gamecube in every major world region, Nintendo 64 in Japan and Others , SNES in Others , and NES in Others , the remaining question is how long it will take to top NES shipments worldwide, which stand at 61.91m to become Nintendo’s best selling console of all time. Since Wii will top 40m shipped worldwide within about two years of its late 2006 launches, the NES could find Wii breathing down its neck by this time next year.

Nintendo triples Wii sales in Q2

Nintendo triples Wii sales in Q2

The Wii console was the main growth driver for the company in the second quarter, lifting earnings by 34% to $996 million. Sales came in at $3.9 billion.

Following the company’s April 25 announcement that Wii production capacity would be gradually increased to about 2.4 million units per month in July, unit shipments of the Wii console have jumped considerably from 1.7 million in Q2 2007 to 5.2 million in Q2 2008. Nintendo said that it has sold a cumulative 29.6 million Wiis, which compares to 19 million Xbox 360s and 14.4 million PS3s. Nintendo previously said that it expects to ship about 25 million Wiis during the current fiscal year.

Wii Fit launched successfully with sales of 3.4 million "Wii Fit" games. "Mario Kart Wii" sold 6.4 million units.

DS sales were down by 40,000 to 6.94 million devices for the quarter. Nintendo, however, said that it remains on track to sell about 28 million units during the 2009 fiscal year. Worldwide DS sales now total 77.54 million, the company said.

The Nintendo Wii has sold 30 million units to customers worldwide, while the Xbox 360 has hit the 20 million benchmark. The PS3 has sold 14.47 million to date. These are units that have been sold to consumers rather than retailers, so the companies' shipped totals will be higher.

For comparison:

The Wii has hit 30M after 87 weeks on the market.
The DS had sold 22M after 87 weeks.
The Ps2 had sold 16M.
The GameCube had sold 8.5M.

It took DS roughly 105 weeks to hit 30M.
It took Ps2 roughly 130 weeks to hit 30M.

This means that the Wii has averaged 344K/week from launch. The Wii is also selling at roughly 3.66 times the speed of the GameCube.

Nintendo: Third-Party Games Not Selling on Wii is a False Assumption

For as long as the Wii has been on the market, industry pundits and journalists have pointed to low software tie ratios and sluggish sales of third-party games on the platform. Nintendo is getting increasingly annoyed by this perception, however. With 19 third-party titles that have sold over 400K units in the U.S. and a few that have gone on to be blockbusters, such as Guitar Hero III and Mario & Sonic, Nintendo feels it's about time that people start thinking differently about how games sell on the Wii.

Speaking to us, Nintendo of America's Vice President of Coporate Affairs, Denise Kaigler, commented, "There is an assumption out there that just simply isn't true... We're setting the record straight. This is fact," she said while pointing to a Nintendo chart based on data from The NPD Group. "We are selling third-party games and they are doing very well, and better than our competitors."

According to the data in the chart, the Wii has sold more software (first-party and third-party combined) than either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3 when looking at the first 19 months of availability in the U.S. for each platform.

Vendas third party:

Wii Third-Party Games Really Do Sell

We discovered that for the first 20 months on the market for each console the Wii comparatively sold several million more units of third-party software in the U.S. than either the Xbox 360 or PS3. More specifically, the Wii sold 33 million units of third-party software in its first 20 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 29 million units and the PS3 sold 20 million units.

nintendo3rdpartysales.jpg

"I actually think that given the number of comments made from industry executives at E3 (or thereabouts) about how they didn't put enough resources against development of Wii games that the industry has realized that the old adage of 'only first-party games sell on Nintendo systems' is absolutely incorrect. I think you're right that the data will cause a few eyebrows to lift," NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier commented.

So where does the perception that third-party games don't sell on Wii come from? Most likely it stems from the respective sales ratios for the three consoles. While third-party software sales comprise well over 80 percent of total game sales on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, on the Wii that number dips all the way down to 56 percent. On the whole, however, because total Wii software sales are so high, even 50-something percent of a huge chunk yields a larger total for third-party sales. But there's still no doubt that Nintendo's incredible first-party success leaves a smaller part of the Wii software market for third parties to fight over. The key, however, as Nintendo has said, is to expand that market so all can benefit. So far, so good.
