Xbox will soon delete more of your game captures in May
While Microsoft apparently started deleting Xbox game captures after 90 days in January, a new Xbox message reveals that captures will be deleted as of May 30.
If you have some memorable game captures from your achievement-hunting adventures saved to the Xbox Network, you might want to start backing them up now. A new Xbox message has revealed that Microsoft will start
deleting Xbox game captures older than 90 days from May 30.
Last September, Microsoft announced that game captures stored on the Xbox Network for longer than 90 days would start being deleted from January 2024. Strangely, though, we're not sure if it went ahead with its plans after all. A new Xbox notification shared on
Reddit (and one we have seen on our own systems) says that deletions will now start on May 30.
Whether Microsoft started deleting players' game captures in January or not, it looks like we now have until May 30 to back up any of the content we want to keep to an external drive or OneDrive.
To be clear, only screenshots and clips uploaded to the Xbox Network will be deleted, so your local captures should be safe — we would still advise you to back those up as well, just to be safe.
Last year, Microsoft added an automatic upload feature to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One which will automatically upload your captures to your OneDrive for you. All you need to do is log in to OneDrive with your Microsoft account to use your free 5GBs of storage — or you can subscribe to the service for more space if you wish. To enable the feature, head to the Captures menu within Settings.
As for the captures you upload to TrueAchievements for achievement guides, we now
convert your clips into YouTube videos so your guides are preserved. So you don't need to worry about your guides becoming defunct after 90 days.
