AMD and Mediatek might form a Joint Venture

According to a report from DigiTimes, AMD and Mediatek are in talks to create a joint venture, expanding AMD’s presence in the mobile market.

The joint venture could extend to the development of custom System on a Chip (SoC) solutions featuring 5G models, WiFi, and other high transmission connectivity modems. Such collaboration could result in devices featuring high-efficiency Mediatek CPU cores and AMD RDNA graphics architecture, already being developed for next-gen Samsung Exynos chips.

This wouldn’t be the first time AMD and Mediatek have worked together, but it was at a much lower scale, ComputerBase reports. Just recently it was reported that AMD developed its own WiFi network chip named AMD RZ608, but as it turned out to was actually a renamed Mediatek MT7921K.

AMD had primarily worked with Qualcomm in the past. A collaboration with MediaTek would expand AMD’s presence in the entry-level market, served by many of MediaTek chips. The details on the joint venture have not been revealed yet, nor have any of the companies confirmed that this is indeed true.

At CES 2021, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed that RDNA2 graphics architecture is coming to Samsung Exynos devices. It is now expected that the first mobile devices featuring AMD graphics are to launch in early 2022.
