WE MANAGED to get hold of one of the first ATI X1600 HDMI cards. We cannot say it is the first card on the market as we are still talking about a prototype but we did manage to get it up and running.
The card uses a small PCB and can fit in just about any case including a home entertainment PC. It sports a VGA connector, HDMI out and SPDIF in. You are supposed to connect your sound card externally to your graphic card and then via HDMI cable you can drive both HD-quality pictures and sound to your TV. I am sure that you will be able to connect the sound internally but you need to know what are you doing.
The card is equipped with VGA and HDMI and you can naturally connect them both. VGA works well, as expected, and we didn’t have any problems using the HDMI. There is also an external SPDIF and a company source suggested that you should connect the external audio SPDIF from your sound card to make it work. It works if you have SPDIF out on your board of sound card.
You connect the cable on the graphic card and on your set and turn it on, and it works. It is as simple as that. The HDMI TV acts as a second display. We tried to connect the HDMI cable through the DVI port using a dongle and this works as well.
So, we can say that it works, it is coming, and that the first batch will probably go to Japan as those guys are much more advanced than folk in the USA or Europe.
You will be able to connect your computer to a HDMI enabled DVD device, BluRay, HD DVD, surround amplifier, satellite receiver or just plain TV set.
