Nintendo unveiling a new portable
By Steven Kent, Special for USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Video game giant Nintendo, facing increased competition in the market for handheld entertainment, will have a new portable out this fall with twin color screens, sharper graphics and the feel of a PDA. The Nintendo DS — short for dual-screen — will be unveiled Tuesday morning at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo game industry gathering.

The DS will sell alongside today's Game Boy Advance, not replace it, according to the company. Nintendo has not announced a release date or price, though analysts predict it may sell in the $150 range.

One of the two 3-inch screens is touch-sensitive and works with a stylus — like Palms and Pocket PCs — to control the action in some games. In one demo, players guide a toddler-age Mario as he falls from the sky by drawing clouds. Other games give multiple views of the action.

The DS also has Bluetooth wireless communication to connect with other units within range for cordless competition. DS has separate slots for current Game Boy Advance cartridges and new, smaller DS game cards.

DS is largely viewed as Nintendo's response to Sony's PlayStation Portable, or PSP, a new system that will play both movies and video games stored on mini DVD discs. Sony has announced plans to release PSP in Japan later this year and in the USA in 2005.

"I have not seen the PSP," says Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the famous Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong characters. "The screen, I believe, is bigger than a DS screen, and I am sure it will have excellent graphic quality." But, he adds, "the PSP will not be able to display anything that you cannot do on a current system. ... We want to do things that you could not do before. We are looking at the creative end."

The DS has slightly more processing power than the Nintendo 64 console released in 1996. While that's nowhere near today's top game-system graphical capabilities, two- and three-dimensional game images, when viewed on DS screens, are surprisingly crisp.

Sony's PSP, reported to be only slightly less powerful than the PlayStation 2, will have a higher-resolution screen and more graphics power. The price has not yet been announced, though estimates have ranged to $250 and up.

Having sold more than 168 million Game Boys worldwide since 1989, Nintendo dominates the handheld game market, even as it's losing market share in console systems to Sony and Microsoft. Over the past 15 years, such companies as Sega, NEC, SNK and most recently cell phone giant Nokia have launched nine competing portable game systems without much success.

You might be able to fool people into thinking your Nintendo DS is a PDA. But turn off the volume just to be safe.

Que rumores são esses Nemesis?

Que rumores são esses Nemesis?

The official story: "Sega cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3. Sega remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be-announced titles."--Sega spokesperson.

What we heard: Ever since Dreamcast production ceased in 2001, the console's diehard fans have held out hope that it would rise from the ashes. This week, hope came in the form of a one-paragraph press invitation to Sega's E3 presentation. "Learn about SEGA's 2004 lineup and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess," read the invite, which promised "explosive news--something even YOU won't be able to guess!" (Emphasis in the original.) Within minutes, Sega loyalists were churning out messianic predictions of a new and improved Dreamcast. "Financially revitalized, finally debt-free, Sega now firmly believes it has what it takes to rule the roost," read one. But before you break out the straightjackets, consider this: Amusement-machine giant Sammy is Sega's majority stockholder, and its president, Hajime Satomi, is Sega's chairman. This year, Sammy's new Atomiswave arcade platform will replace the veteran NeoGeo format. The NeoGeo also came in a home console version, which had a customer base fanatical enough to shell out hundreds of dollars per game--in other words, a proven (if small) market. The Atomiswave's hardware is even more compact than the NeoGeo's. Sammy has announced that Sega will focus on developing games for the Atomiswave. Could Sega's big announcement be a new, Sega-branded home console based on the Atomiswave? It could be, but it would be sort of redundant, because the Atomiswave is already based on Dreamcast hardware.

Bogus or not bogus?: Although it's an intriguing theory, it's probably bogus. Note to Sega: Kudos for making one publicity e-mail go a long way.

It may be pure coincidence but I thought I'd let you know something I heard the other night. I was at dinner with a woman who has worked as a headhunter in the video game industry for 7 years; "Since before there were women in the industry", she says. It was the first time I'd been around a woman with more video game history/knowledge than myself and it was deeply emasculating. More than a little out of my element not being the alpha male in an electronics discussion, I stooped to the tried and true favorite of drowning her in booze to pump up my self esteem. She mentioned after several glasses of wine that she was going to E3. Naturally, acting like the well educated, adult male that I am, I begged and pleaded with her to let me tag along as her assistant making promises to rub her feet at night and let her call me ‘Scoop’. She told me in no uncertain terms that there was no way she would take me.

I had been a little overserved myself so instead of throwing wine in her face like I do with most women who turn down my extravagant requests I entered into an argument about the coming Playstation 3 and Xbox 2 announcements. At this point she mentioned to me how new console announcements are passé since there were four big console makers and they were always announcing something new. Sensing a small victory I pounced, “there are only 3 console makers!” Like a mother scolding her son she replied, “no, there’s Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft.” “Sega?”, I questioned, “but they’re out of the console business?” She stopped what she was saying and looked at me, then mumbled something about how I should forget what she said. Relishing my perceived victory over her supposed video game industry knowledge I let the Sega remark slip thinking it was brought on by the liquor. After seeing your post about a possible Sega announcement I figured I’d drop you a line. I agree with your opinion that a Sega announcement is unlikely, but seeing your post and hearing this woman’s drunken remarks is a little interesting.

Sega's big E3 disappointment
So Sega had their press conference this morning, where they were to unveil something that nobody would ever have guessed (at least, that's what their PR mailings said). This statement, naturally, prompted loads of speculation among the gaming press. So what was the big news? I went there to find out and it's...the fact that Sega is co-publishing The Matrix Online with Warner Bros. Um, yay. Wasn't that announced days ago?

The announcement was followed by a demo of a live big brawl in the game, and boy, was I underwhelmed. Sure the motion-captured kung fu moves look a step up from the combat in most other massively multiplayer online games, but the actual gameplay seems like a snooze-fest. I sure hope there's a lot of other stuff to do in the game, because clicking on icons representing which type of kung-fu you want to watch your character perform is going to get old in a hurry. We'll find out soon enough, I guess. The beta will officially begin on June 1, and everyone who attended the press conference was guaranteed a spot in it.

Some of Sega's other games looked decent, especially Outrun 2 for Xbox (I spent way too many quarters on the arcade classic), but nothing made me jump back and say “WOW!“ Maybe next year, Sega.

Bahhhhhh!!!!!
