[Wii/DS] Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Plasma Beam!

Entrevista CVG:
Geometry Wars has, until now, established Xbox as its home platform. Why has Bizarre/Kuju chosen to bring the series to Nintendo platforms?

Carpenter:
The timing and concept were perfectly aligned. The Geometry Wars gameplay and appeal works on many levels and over a huge age range. The current Nintendo platforms seem to be king and queen of that broad appeal, so hats off to Bizarre for wanting to take their game to that audience.

This will have people pondering the possibility of Geometry Wars appearing on PS3, too. How likely is that?

Carpenter:
Geometry Wars is Bizarre's intellectual property. I can't comment on what else they might do with it on other platforms. What I can say is that Geometry Wars: Galaxies is a Nintendo exclusive!

The crucial factor is obviously the controls; how will both the DS and Wii controls work?

Roger Carpenter:
Both Wii and DS provide great control alternatives to the dual analogue stick set up - that's one of the reasons we went for the concept.

The Remote/Nunchuk and the stylus are very fluid and accurate. We're seeing people used to the Nintendo control methods, reaching very respectable scores within a few attempts. With those who are new to Nintendo's controls, we've seen the same progression and improvement as on the 360. And, yes, its still classic 2D gameplay all the way!

How have you adapted the game concept to accommodate a full single-player campaign?

Carpenter:
We've adapted what was a classic 'coin-feeder' to a much more varied and structured game. In comparison to Retro Evolved it's huge. Think galaxies, solar systems and planets all ripe for exploration and you'll get an idea of how it'll all work.

The single-player game will introduce an all new currency and the need to plan your battle tactics prior to the fight!

Can we expect to see any new enemies or weapons?

Carpenter:
Oh yes. More details later.

It has been revealed that the games will feature a multiplayer mode. Can you tell us more about this?

Carpenter:
Both Wii and DS support two-player multiplayer. Wii is two-player on one console. DS is Wi-Fi with game-share (single-cart play). We're aiming for around four modes for each format including one unique mode for each format too. There's no online multiplayer included in these versions, though.

How alike will the included versions of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on Wii and DS be to the Xbox 360 original, gameplay and graphics wise?

Carpenter:
They're absolutely perfect in terms of gameplay. Visually the DS can't match the resolutions of the 360, but we're confident that the Wii version won't disappoint.

Will the Wii version be compatible with the dual-analogue Classic Controller (with both the new content and the port of Retro Evolved)?

Carpenter:
That would indeed be a nice idea... It's certainly a possibility at this point.

And it would be cool to see my name in the credits if you end up using my idea. Anyway, one of the most crucial parts of the 360 game was the online leaderboard. Will the Wii and DS games include online leaderboards, too?

Carpenter:
Both versions have more online leaderboards than a leaderboard shop that specialises in deluxe leaderboards!

Will the Wii and DS versions be able to link with each other to provide new and interesting features?

Carpenter:
Yes they will. The Geometry Wars: Galaxies concept has always been seen as a full Nintendo platform solution from its early conceptual stage. As such, we'll be rewarding people for having both formats. It certainly looks like it'll be one of the most cross format linked titles to hit the market to date.

Entrevista Gamespot:
Geometry Wars: Galaxies Producer Q&A
Sierra producer Roger Carpenter talks to us about his team's plans for the Wii and DS versions of Geometry Wars.

GameSpot: So, Geometry Wars for the Wii and the Nintendo DS, why did you decide to take the game to those platforms?

Roger Carpenter:
Geometry Wars is a game that appeals to both the hardcore and the not so. It doesn't need a supercomputer to run it; all it needs is enough bang to make it look cool and have some great controls...step forward the Wii and DS. They also provide a great home-and-away solution for the new game, which we think will take GW to a new audience.

GS: We've heard that the games won't simply be ports of the Xbox Live Arcade game, and that they'll feature a single-player campaign. What can you tell us about that?

RC:
It's a bit soon to go telling all, but compared to Retro Evolved, Galaxies is huge. It expands on the "universe" of Geometry Wars in a natural and logical way, introducing stacks of new gameplay. Think solar systems and planets, and you'll get some of the principles. Both Bizarre Creations and Kuju have been beavering away to create some very cool new stuff. And just in case you're wondering, we will have plenty of online leaderboards!

GS: And multiplayer support, how is that going to work?

RC:
Both platforms have two-player multiplayer. Wii is all on one console. DS uses Wi-Fi, with game-share. Right from the get-go, everyone knew that multiplayer was a must-have, so that's what you'll get--at least four modes, including one exclusive for each platform.

GS: Will the craft, weapons, and enemies in the Nintendo games be the same as those seen in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?

RC:
The ship has become a bit of an icon, so that's going to stay as is. Everything else is getting a bit of a shake-up; familiar foes will endure, but there'll be new enemies, weapons, and a healthy number of totally new "things," too.

GS: Will the Wii and DS versions of Geometry Wars: Galaxies be compatible with each other in any way?

RC:
With GWG, we've set out to design one game experience that works equally well on both systems (rather than two separate games), and we've thought of quite a number of ways to reward players for playing both. As far as I know, it's pushing the link between the two systems further than any other game out there.

GS: Both the Wii and the DS have unconventional control systems, and neither can really support the dual-analog controls used in the XBLA game. How do you plan to use the Nintendo consoles' respective controllers? Will the Wii version support the Classic Controller?

RC:
Honestly, it never crossed our minds that either platform would have a problem...and they don't. We're going to provide a number of variations, but the Nunchuk (move) and remote (direction of fire) of the Wii works brilliantly, and so does the stylus on the DS. I'd even be as bold as to say the Wii control method could challenge XBLA GW: RE scores. We've had some pretty impressive ones already.

GS: And how will the DS game take advantage of the handheld's dual-screen setup?

RC:
We use the second screen, whichever one it is, to enhance the gameplay and feedback to the player.

GS: Will the Nintendo games feature something resembling the XBLA version in addition to their new modes?

RC:
Is Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved included? Yes it is. All there, all 100 percent of it, untouched and as excellent as ever. We'll even let you game-share it to as DS friend if you like...even if you own only the Wii version!

GS: And finally, when can we expect to see Geometry Wars: Galaxies in stores?

RC:
It's going to be out in good time for the holidays.

GS: Thanks for your time.

RC:
No problem, nice to have a bit of Britsoft to shout about.

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/shiryu/gridwars54.zip

-Retro Evolved (Xbox Live Arcade version) is just one level (planet) out of the entire galaxy.

-Online Leaderboards per level. Wii and DS version both have leaderboards.

-Battle drones now in the game. Adapt a particular behavior (collect, defend, attack).

-Currency (Geoms) to upgrade your battle drone and new weapons.

-Wii/DS connectivity. If you own a DS you can get download Retro Evolved to your DS (DS game not needed)

-New enemies.

-Co-op on Wii version.

Hands-on Kotaku:

My hands sweating alcohol onto the virgin Wiimote, a producer looked to me skeptically. Could he trust me as a partner, and maybe even a friend? Co-op is one of the new Geometry Wars Galaxies features that freshens a franchise that had prematurely sickened me to death. And the DS options are promising too.

The Wii version is 60 times bigger than the Evolved title you know from XBLA. Set up as a galaxy of planets, you zoom in and out Mass Effect style. Each planet has a different grid shape on the potential for background physics that pull you like current.

The laser sight reminds you where the Wiimote is aimed, since all gun rotation is motion controlled. I was skeptical, but it worked quickly and accurately.

A neat bonus for Wii game owners who aren't purchasing it for the DS is that they can download the original Evolved over ad hoc WiFi. Evolved on the DS is surprisingly perfect for the touchscreen, which you use for all gun control.

I didn't see the full DS Geometry Wars but was told that all the controls are the same as what I demoed of Evolved. While there's no co-op on the DS, players will go head to head, Tetris style. If one player gets X far ahead in points, enemies will spawn on their opponent's screen.

I'm excited about both versions, and another shower...and possibly a colonic cleansing...lest there will be Kotaku beer residue on every controller in Santa Monica.

Impressões finais do Siliconera:

So, in closing? Go. Buy this game. Right now. This is the one Wii game that I'd recommend to everyone, regardless of their taste in games. Anyone should be able to enjoy the pure visceral thrill of being surrounded by countless enemies, struggling to clear yourself a path through them just so you can stay alive long enough to get that Gold medal you've been striving to get for days, or to get those last few Geoms you need to unlock the next planet or galaxy. Simply put, Geometry Wars: Galaxies is the most fun game I've played for the Wii yet. It's addictive, engaging, and just simply amazing. It hearkens back to the old days of gaming, before lifelike 3D graphics and half-hour cutscenes, when the only thing that mattered was staying alive for as long as you could and getting a high score. It's probably the purest gaming experience available today, and the true definition of a "hardcore" game.
