RS690T to have dedicated graphics RAM

IN ORDER TO IMPROVE the performance of the integrated X700 graphics on the RS690T chipset, we can reveal that ATI have decided to add the option of a local frame buffer to their north bridge.

This is mainly to get around a major limitation of the K8 platform: lower memory latency to the CPU comes at the expense of higher memory latency to the integrated GPU on the north bridge. Instead of talking to the RAM directly, as on an Intel GMCH, AMD chipsets must look over the HT bus to the memory controller on the CPU, which can badly decrease performance of integrated graphics. Which aren't exactly the best performing devices in the world anyway.

RS690T uses the pins of the chipset normally dedicated to the PCIe x16 interface for this and, we believe, can support up to 128MB of local frame buffer albeit through a fairly narrow interface. Of course, being targeted at laptop designers, it's incredibly unlikely that there will be a need for the strongest performance integrated graphics, and an external graphics controller at the same time, so it sounds a reasonable compromise.

This trick has, however, been done before by our Taiwanese chums SiS, with their 770 chipset for the K8 platform, but also even earlier back with some members of the SiS630, a Pentium III chipset. However the stronger X700-derived GPU of the X700 should benefit more from higher bandwidth than the older SiS ones, so it's a neat move. μ

More AMD "RS690" Details Revealed

3309_large_morayzu3.jpg

HKEPC has revealed further details on the upcoming AMD RS690 chipset. The new chipset has been named AMD 690G and falls in line with AMD’s new chipset naming scheme. RS690 was previously expected to be named Radeon Xpress 1200 before AMD and ATI merged. It appears the AMD 690G is nearly finished with the latest stepping being A12. Manufacturing of the AMD 690G will be done by TSMC on an 80nm fabrication process.

The upcoming AMD 690G is expected to feature a Radeon X700 derived graphics core that’s been renamed ATI Radeon X1250. Features of the integrated ATI Radeon X1250 include full support for DirectX9, shader model 2.0 support and AVIVO. The AVIVO video engine of the Radeon X1250 supports hardware accelerated H.264 and VC1 video processing for Blu-ray and HD DVD playback.

In addition to the standard RS690 there are four other variants including the RS690C, RS690T, RS690M and RS690MC.The RS690C will be the base chipset and lacks an integrated TMDS transmitter while the RS690T is the high-end variant with support for external video memory which is referred to as Sideport Memory. The RS690M and RS690MC will be targeted towards AMD Turion powered notebooks.

Other notable features of the AMD 690G include support for one PCIe x16 and four PCIe x1. The AMD 690G is expected to pair up with AMD’s SB600 south bridge for SATA 3.0Gbps and high definition audio support. According to the article, the AMD 690G will be pin compatible with the previous Radeon Xpress 1100 and may possibly be able to use the same PCB.

Expect AMD 690G based motherboards to arrive in early 2007 with varied pricing depending on which RS690 variant is employed.

Continuamos a falar duma gráfica integrada.

Suporta AVIVO, logo:
The AVIVO video engine of the Radeon X1250 supports hardware accelerated H.264 and VC1 video processing for Blu-ray and HD DVD playback.

Sim ele suportar suporta. A questão é a performance...

ATi RS690T Chipset Details Unveiled

CHW has gotten hold of a block diagram of RS690T + SB700 for mobile platform codenamed Trevally. It will support Socket S1 based AMD S1g1 processors such as Turion 64 X2 TL-52/54/56/60 "Taylor" and perhaps the next generation 65nm "Tyler" that supports DDR2-800. However, RS690T chipset now only offer supports up to DDR2-400/533/667 SODIMM in Dual Channel mode. To improve performance of the integrated X700 graphics, ATi has linked up with frame buffer of 512MBit DDR2 to RS690T so as to address high memory latency issue. It also leave room for a discrete graphics upgradeable through MXM package on PCIe x8 lane. It is linked up with the SB700 Southbridge to offer 6 SATA II ports, 12 USB 2.0 + 2 USB 1.1 ports, 1 ATA 66/100/133 for Flash module and Azalia HD Audio.
