Nintendo estimated to have sold more than 600,000 Wii consoles at launch

E jogos?

Jogos bons existe e mtos vão sair.

Super Smash Brothers
Super Mario Galaxy:-D
...

Game of chance in search for Wii

A shortage of Nintendo's wildly popular Wii video console has some holiday shoppers on the hunt.

"We've looked everywhere," said Valerie Tyson, who had children Justin, 9, and Claire, 6, in tow yesterday. "Over and over we're told to check back again next week."

But there is a ray of hope for the Tysons, who were visiting the city from Virginia, and others eager to get their hands on the long-awaited video game machines.

Not even Nintendo's flagship store in Rockefeller Center had the Wii yesterday. But both Best Buy and Toys "R" Us told the Daily News they planned to have more available today.

"We're expecting hordes of happy campers to line up outside our door," said a Best Buy clerk at the Bay Parkway branch in Brooklyn.

The largest shipment - of 50 Wii consoles - is expected at the Times Square Toys "R" Us store this morning, employees there said.

The Wii was introduced in late November as a counter-punch to Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360. It has far surpassed the sales of the PlayStation 3, which debuted just two days earlier.

Games fans able to land one of the Wii consoles say they feel like they hit the jackpot.

Brothers Kevin, 10, and Brendan Loeseh, 8, of Monmouth, N.J., were among the few who got the Wii at the Nintendo World Store before the consoles sold out.

"We were the 12th in line after camping out all night with our mom," said Kevin, "and we finally got one!"

Nintendo Wii: Still Impossible to Buy
Chances for a Wii by the holidays are getting slimmer.

As we reported a few days ago, Sunday the 17th was supposed to be a last chance for many to find a Nintendo Wii before the Christmas holiday. Several retail chains had apparently been stockpiling units for this day so they could advertise Wii availability in their stores.

Unfortunately, whatever amount they were able to stockpile clearly wasn't even close to enough.

At a Best Buy in Colma California this morning, we spotted over 200 people waiting in line, several having stood in the cold the entire night. Only 20 of those camped out were lucky enough to get units when the store opened. Target down the street had over 100 people camped out...for the 8 units the store ultimately received.

Nintendo maintains that more shipments are still on their way this month, though how many more units will hit stores this week remains to be seen. How about you guys - were you able to score a Nintendo Wii today? Any suggestions for trying to still get one before Christmas?

Lines, anger, police ... A Wii story
A CNN staffer learns first hand what it's like to be lucky ... maybe too lucky.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- We all know the new Nintendo Wii is the number one present to give this holiday season. You've heard the stories of those who camp out in front of stores the night before shipments come in, or those who pay double the cost on eBay. It's obvious that people will do almost anything to get their hands on this hot new item.

I found myself waiting for a Nintendo Wii one late afternoon. A massive shipment had just come in that morning and the line didn't look too unbearable, so I decided to wait and try my chances at getting one for my boyfriend. Since it was a little late in the day, I knew the odds were against me, but for some strange reason, I was feeling optimistic.

I didn't see any other women in line and I didn't bother talking to the guys around me. All of them were way too serious about this; full of anxiety and tension. I had never felt so out of place in my life. It seemed like each one of their lives depended on whether or not they got this game system. Their eyes were fixed on the front of the line. No one knew how many were left. We were all just hoping the last box would be ours.

After about 2 hours I was near the front of the line. Could this be it? I could see the pile of white boxes dwindling down. My heart sunk. I started to get nervous. Why didn't I come earlier? I couldn't imagine getting this close and not getting one! That wasn't even an option anymore.

Closer and closer until finally, I was handed a white box. I honestly could not believe it. In that one moment I became the girlfriend with the perfect Christmas present. My heart was pounding and I kept asking the guy, "Are you sure this is it? This is the new Nintendo Wii right?" I couldn't help it...I was shaking with excitement and felt like this was one great day.

While paying at the register, the man handling the Wii's said very loudly to the line full of people still waiting, "Sorry folks, that's it. There's no more for today." Instantly I started hearing groans and seeing other disappointing gestures. It was then that I realized the position I was in...here I was in line with all these tense guys who didn't get a game system and I did. All at once, I felt their angry, jealous eyes shift focus to me. To them, I was an easy target. But I felt confident that I could deal with angry Christmas shoppers. After all, there were still 2 weeks left of shopping. That's plenty of time to get a Wii.

"Hey, I'll give you triple for what you just paid..."

"There's no way you deserve that game system..."

"You probably don't even know how to play. Here, give it to me. I'll put it to good use..."

Were these people crazy?? Yes, they were. It only went downhill from there. While I was walking toward the exit, unsatisfied customers began to grab at my bag. Just like that! They were acting as if I was just going to give it to them. There was no way anyone was taking this away from me. I was caught off guard in a game of tug-a-war when a security guard intervened and rescued me from the chaos.

He took me outside. And the crowd followed.

The security guard flagged a police car. I thankfully jumped in. And it was a police escort for me and my Wii back to work.

I have not experienced any more drama with the Wii. Afraid of how my roommates would react to a Nintendo Wii being in our house, I hid it from them in a secure location until I can safely wrap it up and give it to my boyfriend for Christmas. Mission accomplished.

Rumor had it that many stores were holding on to their shipments from last week to begin selling tomorrow morning to coincide with the Sunday flyer advertisements -- an archaic concept for sure, but that was the rumor.

We stopped by the Dedham, MA Best Buy this evening to see what was going on. Although there was no confirmation of any PS3s on premises, they did have a printout with a confirmed count of 24 Wiis. At 1AM there were only 14 people waiting outside, however three of them were willing to sell their spots. Alicia, Morgan and Norman are ready to give up their spot for $75. Alicia says, "As college students you're going to be doing stupid stuff anyway, at least this way we'll be making money off of it."

On the other hand we met Joe who was waiting outside in the 31 degree (-1 C) weather because of the Wii's good buzz, he says, "I'm gonna be completely honest, I didn't want the Wii, but my friend got one at launch and he can't stop talking about it. So, I figure, for $250 -- why not?" Joe already purchased Zelda, now he just needs the system to play it on.

Mega Fail for people in PA (Wii related) #1

So I get the devious idea to wake up 20 minutes before Best Buy opens and head up there to get a Wii, since they are getting so many (yeah, maybe in NYC :|) I set my alarm and after a horrible insomnia filled night I wake up around 6:50AM. Best buy opens at 8:00AM. So I head out to check the paper to see which store has it in stock. I see that Best Buy is giving tickets away 1 hour prior to opening (10 min!) So I quickly rush out the door.

Upon arriving I see nothing but bread crums everywhere in the lot near the doors. Not a good sign. So I wait there and a line begins to build up (Im 2nd). We all speculate that they gave tickets away already but noone really knows, none of the employees will even look in your general direction. The only sign thats posted is a DS Lite one saying its not in stock (wtf, is it that hard to come by?)

So after waiting for about 20 minutes a dude shows up who was here last night. He says he has ticket 5, and that there was 60 people lined up (WTF!!!), only 17 got tickets.

I said WOW! This shitty town doesnt even have that many gamers, so I cant help but speculate that all these assholes are scalping. This was semi-confirmed when a van pulled up and began talking to the #1 spot person. They let it slip that they were a team and that the one who pulled up had just got TWO Wii's from Toys R Us.

God I hate people.

I left, went around to EB and other places. Amazingly EB had a line of about 20 people. 2 HOURS BEFORE EB EVEN OPENS. What the hell is wrong with people!?!?

(...)

In a backwater town where I live? Hell yes, Its worked this way every year for me. Even with the 360 it wasnt so bad (Then again I wasnt looking for one near launch). Not sure wtf happened but its all gone to hell now :\

Woot Sells PS3? Wii, Wii!

So, hey, check it out: there’s this awesome new gaming system that we just can’t stop playing. Too bad it’s so hard to find in stores – we guess they just didn’t make enough of them. It’s called the Nintendo Wii, and holy mother of Zelda, is it ever a blast. If the Wii is cool with polygamy, we might ask it to marry us.

The controller – so easy! No more intricate push-this-twice, pull-that-three-times trickery, just easy waves of the hand. The console – so cute! It actually makes our gaming room look better, unlike the bulky, ugly consoles we could mention. How does Nintendo keep the price so low on that thing, anyway? And the games, good Lord, the games! Not to mention those adorable avatars. We’ve already created virtual versions of the entire staff, so we can beat each other virtually-bloody instead of actually-bloody, like we usually do. The only problem is that none of the nose options are as big as Jason’s actual nose. But that’s a minor quibble.

In fact, we love the Wii so much, we want to give a Wii to everybody on our payroll. To fund this Wii-for-the-People program, we're selling this Sony PlayStation 3. The SIXAXIS wireless controller is basically the same complicated gazillion-button-style controller you know from past PS models, but at least you won’t be fighting Grandma for gaming time. Along with the usual roster of ho-hum games, the PS3 can play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs, and the 20GB hard drive can store music, videos, and music videos. It’s certainly, er, rather full-figured, for those of you who want a lot of heft for your money. And its HDMI capabilities give you polygons and frames-per-second out the wazoo, if you prefer that stuff to having fun.

Best of all, for every PS3 you buy, we can buy Wiis for two of our employees. So when you get frustrated by those intricate combo-button moves, or bored by the underwhelming game offerings for the PS3, keep the spirit of the season in mind. Remember all those happy Woot staffers whose lives have been changed by their super-fun Nintendo Wiis, paid for by you. Heartwarming, isn’t it?

* shipped today via FedEx Next Day with Saturday delivery. Rural and snowbound areas may cause delivery delay out of Woot or FedEx control.

Warranty: One year

Features:

* Plays video games and stuff

Toys'R'Us Lies
Can't get a Wii in the UK? Read about how hundreds of New Yorkers were given the cold shoulder by Toys'R'Us flagship store this week.

The scenario: I live in New Jersey, a mere ten minutes from midtown Manhattan (New York, New York as it were), which is the location of the worlds largest toy store “Toys ‘R Us Times Square”. It has many distinguishing features: a Giant animatronic T-rex, a walk-in two storey Barbie House, an actual Cabbage Patch full of the infamous “Kids” and most notably of all, the largest deliveries of Wiis ANYWHERE! On launch when most stores were lucky to have 80-100 Wiis in stock, TRU had almost 9,000. Wiis were on sale there for well over a week after the launch, two per customer no less. I felt like the luckiest little boy in the whole world.

Having told every non-New York area resident I could about how awesome my location was it was inevitable that it would come back to bite me in the rear. As sure as Sony launches are under-stocked, I got a call last week from my parents hoping I could get one for my little brother’s Christmas present. Seeing as he’s always made me proud, loves video games - hates sports, I was glad to take up the task.

After some extensive asking around and phone call making I discovered what most Americans had found out: all stores were holding Wiis until Sunday December 17th as it’s the last big shopping weekend day before Christmas (I personally would have assumed Saturday the 23rd to be that day, but then I’m not a high powered regional manager for a department store). Assuming my local Toys’r’Us would hold true to form, they got at least one other multi-thousand shipment post launch, I made plans to be there bright and early.

I arrived promptly at 7am, a full two hours before the store was supposed to open. Somewhat to my surprise there were already roughly 500 people queued up ahead of me. I decided to stick it out anyway as I figured they would probably have a few thousand of the little white wonders in stock. By the time 9am rolled around the line outside had reached launch day proportions, wrapping almost all the way around the block and back to the front door. Seeing as security had not chased us away yet I felt confident I would be successful. The doors open and slowly we moved forward.

The store was using a slightly dubious method it had been using previously whereby a person in line for Wii was handed a ticket as they entered the store, and only those with tickets were allowed to purchase systems. Unlike launch day, however, numbers were now limited to one per person. This had worked fine for the store previously when it had only sold a few hundred a day in as a trickle tactic, but this time it was different. Multiple news reports the days before had informed all of the greater metropolitan area that this was the place to be if you hoped to get a Wii, and seemingly all of NYC showed up to try.

After a few hours of waiting in line people started to get anxious; many wondered if they would be able to get a system. No one knew “for sure” how many they even had. Then finally around 11am, after I had moved maybe two thirds of the distance from my starting point to the door, someone from the store got the bright idea to do a head count. Me and my surrounding brothers-in-line were told we were fine. It wasn’t until about another 50 feet past my position that people were told they were in the “maybe” section. So, we continued to wait.

It was around this same time that some problems started to occur towards the beginning of the line. Due to the fact that many other businesses exist on the same block as Toys’r’Us some spaces had to be left in the line for their customers to come and go. The opportunistic jerks of the world that didn’t show up ‘til nearly noon decided this would be a good way for them to score a Wii and a good night of sleep. I myself actually witnessed a woman who was 60 (if she was a day) try and sneak into the line a few people in front of me, most likely to pick up the system for a grand child. Tis’ the season I guess.

Once these little altercations began occurring, the integrity of the line began to fall into question. Large groups of people had obviously infiltrated at multiple points; people I was once in speaking distance of were now 30 feet ahead of me. The husband of the woman in line behind me, along with several others throughout I imagine, made sure to bring this to the attention of the rather inattentive security team. This is when things seemed to take a turn for the worse. Rumours started to spread that sales were ending and that only a few people right up by the door were going to be able to purchase. Having already waited for five or more hours we decided to wait to hear it from the horse’s mouth.

Finally, at around 1:30pm, word came around from official looking folks in black clothes and CIA style headpieces insisted that the store was “sold out” but it was getting more, and that we should return in the morning. Now, for those of you who don’t live in America or work in the shipping industry let me explain a little something to you. Deliveries are almost never made on Sundays, especially at night. It doesn’t happen. Sure there are exceptions, but in this case it seemed highly dubious.

Thankfully the store was still open to the public and after much bitching and complaining from myself, and several hundred others, I decided to go investigate further. Upon arriving in “The R-Zone” (Toys’R’Us’ video game department) I found a few employees who were taking down a mountain of Wiis and loading them onto a cart. I very unassumingly asked them what they were doing, to which they wilfully replied, “We’re putting these away. We’re done selling, no more till tomorrow.”. Well shit.

So, there I was, 6.5 hours of foot pain and wind burn and no Wii to show for it. We tried to get them to give us rain checks of some sort so we could return the next day more easily, but they would have none of it. We asked if tomorrow tickets would be handed out early on so people would know if they were getting a Wii or not and people wouldn’t be able to cut in line; “It’ll be just like today” I was assured. “Is there a manager to speak with?” I implored them. “He’s busy,” they replied.

So, this is customer service in the land of Geoffrey the Giraffe. Tell hundreds of people that you will have an item at a particular time, don’t tell them how many, let them wait in the cold for hours without any communication, and then when the going gets tough kick them to the curb. Real freaking nice.

trulies227967lkm9.jpg

For the sake of sensationalism, and because I could not make this up if I tried, I would like to give you a little perspective of the people I was screwed over with. Directly in front of me were two businessmen who were looking to score the hot holiday item for their children. Two spaces behind me was a group of three who were all picking up Wiis for daughters and nephews and such. Most notable, however, was the woman directly to my rear. For the sake of privacy I won’t reveal her name, but I can tell you that she suffers from a crippling muscular condition that confines her to a wheelchair. Only one of her hands is even close to fully functional as the other is too stiff to use for much.

She was in NYC on vacation and had missed her flight back home the previous night because of problems with her motorised chair. That evening she and her husband saw on the news that the Wii would be available the next morning at the Toys’R’Us in Time Square, conveniently located a block from their hotel. She was excited, not for her children, of which she has none, or for a niece or nephew, but for herself. She explained to me how much she had enjoyed video games when she was younger on the NES. The single D-pad and only two buttons allowed her to play most everything on the system and she actually used the zapper and Duck Hunt daily to help her with coordination.

All the systems released after that were too complicated for her to use, with multiple directional inputs and excessive buttons. She had heard about the Wii online, and in the news, and was thrilled at the prospect of being able to play a game again, especially if it could offer her some kind of exercise as well. Being confined to the chair she was unable to do much. I was stunned by this story and couldn’t help but think that this is just the sort of thing Nintendo had hoped for, a simple input method that would allow as large an audience as possible to enjoy video games.

As you can probably surmise, she was unable to get a Wii that morning. Now I want to ensure that this does not come off as some sort of sob story on her part. She was a very happy person and didn’t seem in the slightest bit bitter about the hand she had been dealt. This is just my perspective and feelings on the situation.

To summarise: T’r’U told people who came into the store and asked that they should come Sunday at 9am if they wanted a Wii. People lined up as early as the night before. People who showed up as early as 6:30 am were denied sales because of T’R’U’s poor crowd control and management. When a manager’s audience was requested by a large group of customers they were categorically denied.

Either T’R’U lied about being sold out in order to disperse the crowd rather than correcting the situation and doing right by the customers. Or it it made a huge and market-illogical screw-up. Either way many people who waited for many hours in the cold, like my gracious lady acquaintance, were unjustly denied service and felt that they had been repeatedly lied to.

SPOnG will be contacting T’R’U in NYC for a comment on the incident and will let you know as soon as we here something. I for one shall not be giving the company any further patronage until this is addressed and the manager responsible for this despicable mess is properly reprimanded.

Compare our reporter's experience with that Stephanie Tolomeo, also from the US.

PS3s Being Traded For Wiis
By Jason McMaster

So, first people camp out in front of Best Buys for days at a time to get the PS3, and then they trade them for Nintendo Wiis. Seriously. Tony Conrad, CEO and Founder of Sphere, pointed this out to us and we had to see it to believe it. There are people out there trying to trade their PS3s for Nintendo Wiis and some of them are offering to take a loss. In order to check out exactly how widespread this phenomenon is, I had to venture into the dangerous, uncharted waters of craigslist.org and start doing a little searching of my own.

We decided upon looking in some of the hottest cities on craigslist: Austin, New York and San Francisco. In my search of Austin, I only turned up 6 total people who wanted to trade their PS3 for a Wii, so I moved on to New York City, which boasted a pretty substantial 18 desired trades. Here’s where it gets crazy: in San Francisco, there are 48 different PS3 for Wii trades going on at this moment. Now, keep in mind, most of these trades are requesting a Wii plus cash difference, but there is the occasional barter that will take a loss just to get their hands on the latest Nintendo console.

Why would these people want to trade their hard-earned PS3 for a Nintendo Wii, since the Wii’s distribution dwarfs that of the PS3? Most of the people who camped out for a Nintendo Wii did so for maybe 4 hours. While the PS3 lines were plagued with greedy eBayers and shootings, the Wii lines around where I live were full of people drinking cocoa and taking turns playing DS games. There are a few possible answers.

First, it’s possible that the people trading for the Wii are the ones who managed to grab a couple of PS3s during a restock and can’t move them for as much as they’d like on eBay. Being a completist, I can understand this mentality, because I want every console in every generation. What better use of a second PS3 than getting a Wii plus a little cash?

Another scenario could be that they’re trading the PS3s, which are dropping in price on eBay, for the Wii to try and flip it right before the holidays. This theory is given credit by a few traders looking for 2 Wiis for a 60 GB PS3. That would definitely be a profit gain situation.

Finally, it could just be people who got the PS3 and have been terribly disappointed in the software line-up. The only game that seems to be doing relatively well in the ratings is Resistance: Fall of Man, and that’s not really enough to carry a $500-$600 system. I would love to confirm these thoughts, but all of the people I’ve tried to contact to ask why they’re selling their systems either declined to comment or didn’t have time.

No matter what it turns out to be, I would have never pictured this scenario. Sony has or, depending on who you talk to, had very powerful name recognition. It’s impossible to call a winner this early in the console war, but this time it’s going to be a much closer race.

Closer? A PS3 vai ficar a milhas! Se as que estão a ser vendidas já estão a abandonar os lares, estou para ver como é que vai ser "digerida" aqui na europa, terra de PlayStations por excelência (sou será por ignorância?).
