Free Live weekend canceled?

[UPDATE] Microsoft pulls Free Xbox Live Gold weekend promo from its calendar just a day after news hits the Web; state of event up in the air.

Yesterday, next-gen gamers on a budget were happy to hear about a new promotion (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6144818.html) from Microsoft. The Free Xbox Live Gold Weekend was designed to do exactly what its name says--give all Xbox 360 owners a chance to experience the benefits of a Gold membership on Xbox Live--and was scheduled to begin April 1.
Silver subscribers were happy to hear the news, as they would be able to take on other gamers in online multiplayer games without paying for the service, which costs $7.99 a month or $49.99 for a year. Many Gold-level subscribers, on the other hand, weren't exactly looking forward to sharing the space with "noobs."
Now it looks as though the division between the rich and the richer may remain. The 72-hour trial was first made public on Xbox.com's calendar of upcoming events (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/calendar/) but has since been removed.
When asked to comment on the weekend yesterday, a Microsoft rep said the company had not yet announced such a thing and was unaware of its existence. So was the posting on the Xbox.com calendar a cruel April Fools' Day joke? An error on the part of an employee? Silver subscribers had better save their pennies, as nothing is certain now.
[UPDATE] On Gamerscore Blog (http://gamerscoreblog.com/), a blog written by Microsoft employees, a post clears up the confusion. Apparently, a free Xbox Live Gold weekend is indeed in the works, but details have not been finalized.
"The Xbox.com team pulled [the calendar announcement] down, because the dates were tentative...We'll share details as soon as we can," reads the post.

Free Xbox Live weekend official

Verizon sponsors three days of complimentary online Xbox 360 play, giveaway of a million Marketplace points.

The free Xbox Live Gold Weekend (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6144883.html) is on again, officially this time. Microsoft today announced that the first free Xbox Live Gold weekend will run from Friday, March 31, through Sunday, April 2. The event will be sponsored by telecom company Verizon.
In addition to free online play against 360 gamers worldwide, players will be able to participate in "Play and Win" contests and Xbox Live Arcade leaderboard tournaments, as well as win Xbox Live Marketplace points, as part of the Verizon One Million Microsoft Points giveaway. The points will be given away--500 per gamer (the equivalent of $6.25)--while supplies last, but Verizon won't reveal what 360 owners need to do to secure them until March 30.
The of live events is online now and lists a pair of Project Gotham Racing 3 "Play and Win" contests, where gamers can earn PGR3 faceplates; a Geometry Wars challenge, where players will get a chance at winning prizes; and a number of chances to compete against the Xbox Team in games ranging from Fight Night Round 3 to Marble Blast Ultra to College Hoops 2K6. Gamers will also get a chance to challenge Ubisoft's Frag Dolls in games of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter that Friday night.
This won't be Verizon's only participation in Xbox Live. The company has also announced that it is sponsoring a PGR3 tournament for racers in North America, Europe, and Asia that will kick off April 10, with the finalists from each region being flown to Italy to tour Lamborghini's headquarters.
