Weren't you there during the discussions when IBM convinced Apple to adopt the G5?
Mayer: In my previous job, I ran IBM's semiconductor business. So I've seen both sides of the Apple story, because I sold the G5 to Steve (Jobs) the first time he wanted to move to Intel.

Five years ago?
Mayer: Yeah, that's about right. So I sold the G5. First I told IBM that we needed to do it, and then I sold it to Apple that the G5 was good and it was going to be the follow-on of the PowerPC road map for the desktop. It worked pretty well. And then IBM decided not to take the G5 into the laptop and decided to really focus its chip business on the game consoles.

A entrevista ainda tem coisas mais interessantes como o BMW serie 7 utiliza PowerPC a 16bits.

Mayer: Air bag deployment, moving the seats, the power train, Telematics, OnStar, entertainment systems, the transmission...

Já tinha lido, interessante de facto! se tivessem mudado pa intel á 5 anos, hoje n teria um G5, será que estava a escrever agora num P4?? :p

acho que aliás já se tinha em mente mudar ha + tempo... havia o rhapsody (aqui (http://toastytech.com/guis/rhap.html)) e tb houve uma versão x86 do sistema 7, que ja foi referida pelo encarnado... so n sei pk é ke so pensam mudar agora, a ideia n é nova... :P

Não esqueçer as raizes do X.
Já aqui foi discutido, as raizes do X já tinham uma versão x86.

NeXTStep -> OpenStep -> Rhapsody -> Mac OS X

A ultima versão conhecida para x86 era a Rhapsody 5.1 DR2, portanto não era muito dificil para a Apple fazer uma versão x86 do X.

A "ida" para o G5 para mim foi uma banhada, pelo que já se viu, a IBM falhou na entrega de um G5 a 3Ghz e anda-se à mais de 2 anos à espera.
Se a Apple tem mudado do G4 para Pentium 4, provavelmente a mudança seria + dificultada já que estava muita gente na transição do OS 9 para o X (ou provavelmente seria o contrario).
Agora que muita gente deixou de usar OS 9, a mudança para Intel seja mais facilitada.
Isto é tudo suposições, só saberiamos se realmente o G5 não tivesse existido.
