The engine we're testing with now is up to build 918, up from build 848 we originally tested with back in January. The benchmark today is much more stressful than even what we used in our GeForce4 review and according to Epic, it's even more stressful than most game scenarios will be but it makes for a wonderful benchmark. A number of optimizations for both ATI and NVIDIA's architectures have also been implemented into the engine. The only thing to keep in mind is to not focus on the actual frame rates themselves but the performance standings as things will be a bit less stressful when UT2003 comes around. Vehicles will only be present on the Xbox title, a disappointment for PC gamers, and any voice communication will have to be directed through third-party software, whereas Digital Extremes intend for it to be built into Unreal Championship. Graphically, the two titles should be similar, as Rein quoted the Xbox as a decent minimum spec for PC users. Wilbur concurred: "Any machine that's been purchased in the last year - Pentium III or high Celeron. TNT2 level will play okay. Geforce3 and up and you're really starting to kick some ass." Players with pixel and vertex-shader enabled videocards should be in for a particular treat, with a material systems shader in place, as well as dynamic particle effects - for example, smoke that billows as missiles pass through it. " Ou seja os melhores extras vão parar a XBOCHE possessed 17-04-2002, 10:36 XBROXE Korben_Dallas 18-04-2002, 00:41 Preview do jogo no gamesdomain.com: "We grabbed Jay Wilbur, self-proclaimed 'spiritual advisor' for Epic Games to talk us through some of the aspects of the new game, leaving Mark to continue his reign of terror in the LAN room. One thing the team was clear about was that Unreal Tournament 2003 is more than just a sequel; it is an attempt to move the genre forwards in terms of how it is perceived. "This kind of game has been a sport for quite some time," explained Wilbur. "But it hasn't really taken off the way we think it could, and we want to encourage it. I've seen people play these games on the big screen where there's a lot of money on the line, and there's people jumping up and down and screaming, just like you were at a football game. It's an amazing thing." It's part of the reason for the name change from Unreal Tournament 2 to Unreal Tournament 2003. "We're clearly delineating that it's a sports game," continued Wilbur. "From the name, to the presentation of the menus, to the presentation of the games, through the setup of the teams. All facets from beginning to end, it reeks of sport." Bombing run is a part of this change - a ball spawns between two team bases, and after picking it up, a member of one team must then deliver it to the enemy base. It brought back recollections in particular of 2000AD's Mean Arena, which didn't particularly strike a chord: "Now y'see, when I saw it, I thought Rollerball - the same kind of concept. You don't have skates on or anything, but you gotta get the ball, and there's guns and all sorts of mayhem going on." The idea of encouraging teamwork continues into other reworked modes. Domination has been replaced with double domination, which now requires a team to hold two areas for five seconds in order to score. There won't be a reappearance of assault mode, however, as Mark Rein chipped in: "Other games, like Medal of Honor, just do it better. Besides, there's Unreal 2 coming soon, which is entirely assault mode. We found that with Unreal Tournament, very few games online were with assault mode." Many of the Unreal Tournament favourites make a welcome return in terms of armament, although tweaked to account for gripes and new tactics. The default weapon remains the assault rifle, but the grenade launcher has been incorporated as a secondary fire mechanism. The impact hammer has been replaced with a shield gun that reduces damage with secondary fire, delivering a concussive blast with primary, and the link gun replaces the pulse rifle, allowing players to charge up their team members. Other weapons such as the translocator, minigun and redeemer make a comeback, as well as Wilbur's favourite, the flak cannon. "They've changed the flak cannon in the current build. In UT, with the flak cannon primary fire, you had like five bounces - [now] you only get one bounce. So before you could, like, 'bababa!' with primary and just fill the room with flak. Now you can't do that, so it makes it a little bit more skill-based." Epic has been particularly hot on preventing online cheating, which is vital if you wish your game to be taken seriously for competitions. They have even gone to the extent of hiring Dr. Sin, the founder of the anti-cheat project CSHP (client-side hack protection). "Yeah, Joe to us," laughed Wilbur. "I can tell you that Dr. Sin has been on the payroll working for the last six to eight months at the source level - with the client-side stuff, he didn't have source-level access. Now he is right into the guts of the code, and that's been his job, so if it's possible, we'll take every measure." "But you have to remember," Wilbur continued, "there's a balance that has to be struck, because we provide a giant doorway into the game with mods and mutators, so the ultimate way to keep people from any cheating whatsoever would be to provide a closed game - absolutely no mods, no mutator access, all the editing tools, you don't get 'em. But you know, that sucks." Players can certainly expect a CD-key for online play, which should protect them in terms of online warez play. Another innovation for the title is the creation of special moves. There will be two types: 'natural' special moves, such as a double left or right for a dodge, or a super-jump that lets you increase the height of your jump by leaping again at the apex of a leap; and 'pickup' special moves, although it's undecided if these might be earned rather than found. "You might earn the special when you're on a rampage and you get the guy saying "unstoppable!" - at that point, maybe you might get a beserker bonus, where you multiply your damage by a certain factor," Wilbur said. The moves will be available to everyone, however, not keyed to particular races - the skins in-game are just that, skins. Unfortunately, some additions won't make it to the PC version of the title, but will appear in its console equivalent, Unreal Championship. In fact, the graphics on the version we were playing were universally superb. Being an unfinished build, some animations were lacking, but the scenery was excellent, particularly in the outdoor levels, featuring waist-high grass, deep patches of light and shadow, and a nice variety of multi-level pathways and walkways. Thankfully, die-hard snipers have been put to rest, or at least restricted a little, as the lightning gun now double as an infra-red sniping rifle. Its efficacy hasn't been diminished, but the bright energy blast gives a clear indication of sniper location, as well as blanking out the firer's vision for a second. Sadly, the much-vaunted Karma physics engine, as created by British developer Mathengine wasn't activated in the build we were playing, but it promises great things. "We've employed the physics so that we'll be able to tag items. Say there's a room with all sorts of barrels, and you can tag those barrels so they have specific physical properties that karma provides. And you can maybe make these great little physics 'puzzles'," Wilbur elaborated. "You can tag your people -- your characters -- to have ragdoll physics. In UT, if your guys fell down the stairs, they'd hang there like that [makes flat gesture with hand] - no more, now they'll slide right down the stairs." Epic expects a life-span of at least five years for the current version of the Unreal engine - it's not the software that's holding back the developers, but instead the hardware currently available. Expect the series of updates that are due to be published post-release to scale upwards as hardware power increases. The new game will include an auto-patching utility so that players don't have to miss updates. The original Unreal Tournament had four free bonus packs released incorporating new maps, game types, characters, and skeletal animations before the whole lot was released in a 'Game of the Year' edition. You can expect a similar situation with UT2003. As well as the comprehensive multiplayer mode, UT2003 will ship with a complete single player mode, allowing you to build a team and take them through a tournament, unlocking extra team members and so on as you proceed. The players come with three statistics that increase as you win games, and are assigned typical sporting roles such as offence and defence. To back them up, there's a wealth of background information, although it's unlikely you'll be too fascinated in just which planet the funny-headed aliens come from. Part of the excitement over UT2003 comes not just from the game itself, but from the Unreal editor, a direct gateway for mod and map makers. The editor allows map creators to include prefabs or static meshes, previously created in 3D Studio Max, and imported into the editor. It's a modular approach that coexists happily with the BSP (Binary Spacial Partitioning, acronym fans) of the previous editor. Because the prefabs can be used a number of times within one map -- wall sections, for example -- they only need to be loaded once, reducing map sizes. An outdoor map we played through of a fairly decent size had a file footprint of a mere 2MB. The editor also contains tidy little tools for terrain morphing such as smoothing and deformation, not unlike those available in classic god-sim Populous. It's a more simple approach, but if even that's too much for you, look out for the Unreal editor textbook, which should be appearing in bookshops near you this Christmas. Look out for a full review of Unreal Tournament 2003 coming near its release date in June, 2002."
