WASHINGTON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Wednesday dismissed Infineon's fraud claim against Rambus and breathed new life into Rambus Inc.'s (RMBS,Trade) claim that Infineon Technologies AG ((IFXGn.DE)) infringed its patents.
A three judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that a lower court had erred and that the evidence did not support part of a jury ruling in favor of Infineon.
Infineon and some other technologies have accused Rambus of tricking computer-chip makers into adopting technologies for which it held or was seeking patents for chips in a wide range of electronic gear.
Rambus stock soared on the news, rising 50 percent to $11.16 a share in mid-afternoon trading on the Nasdaq market.
The Infineon lawsuit is the first of several cases in which Rambus is squaring off with memory chip makers over patent infringement. A case involving Hynix Semiconductor Inc. ((00660.KS)) of Korea, among others, is on hold pending the outcome of the Infineon case.
