The project is codenamed Shards, and it draws on the dev trio's experiences building Dark Age of Camelot, Warhammer Online, UO, and classic Elder Scrolls RPGs.
"If you think UO with a more polished and modern 3D look, using the Titan Quest camera view, you’ll get an idea.
Ripper X and I were seriously blown away by Citadel’s vision, and we can’t wait to see the game in a more finished state..."
"Shards also has a housing system that can be completely customized."
When asked about the missing map on the UI, Brinkmann noted that this is something that they are discussing at the moment. It might be part of the game as a whole map system but the idea right now is for players to go around and discover the maps on their own to unlock them. Right now, the closest thing to seeing who is on a map — something very useful in PvP matches as well — is blue and red arrows seen on the edges of the screen, noting the closest players and NPCs.
We talked about a survival mode earlier. This mode places a character into a map with nothing but a pair of pants, boots, and his bare hands. Players will have to run around and find the proper materials to build a crafting table, which is meant to build other types of objects like weaponry. In this mode, as stated before, the meat you find and cook is meant to be eaten to regen health. A potential side of Shards for a lot of online play shenanigans between friends and new players alike!
When asked about the possibility of the game being on Steam, Brinkmann stated that they haven’t committed to any distribution platforms yet, even though the audience of Steam would be great for this game. But nothing has been discussed about it so far. There is also a possibility of companion apps, also post-launch and in the very distant future, which would give some kind of interaction with the world. This could include something like hiring NPCs to mine for you and getting notifications when they are done.
Greetings newly attuned mortals!
We want to send a massive THANK YOU to all our Day One backers!
It's awesome to see people as excited about Shards Online as we are.
You are all now honorary members of the Shards Online Team.
We need you to keep on spreading the good word.
Here's a preview of some of the really cool things we have planned for this campaign:
- Live twitch streams of the developers playing the pre-alpha build. The first stream will be announced very soon.
- Map showcases with amazing concept art of the first maps slated to go into Shards Online
- “Modding 101” sessions with Founder and Lead Engineer, Derek Brinkmann
- Fantastic fiction from the insane mind of our Founder and Creative Director, Tim Cotten
- Systems deep dives on some of the features that make Shards truly different from other modern MMOs. The first one will focus on gods and clusters and is coming very soon!
